‘Turning my hobby into a career’

Steven Verwoerdt is our Chief Mechanic Engineer. He has been managing everything in the workshop since 2008: from the moment a vehicle comes in to the moment it leaves the door. In this interview, Steven tells us more about himself, his job and Intermotive!

Steven: “My colleague and I receive the vehicles by container and take care of the documentation. Then we check the orders and do the ‘builds’.”

Customer requests

“For larger orders, we get reinforcements. I am responsible for the whole process, up to dispatch. This is done in close consultation with our sales department and based on the customer's wishes. Each order is unique and presents a new challenge. Especially when it comes to the specific requirements of mining. We are driven to go the extra mile to meet the customer’s requirements.”

Mutual understanding and experience

“My days are very varied”, Steven continues. “I do a lot of vehicle modification work. In our workshop, the cars are often quite conventional, with few electronic modifications. I do a lot of executive work, and I am always aware of what stage an order is at. To accomplish this, he liaises with his colleagues in the office. “They tell us which jobs we can carry out. The interaction with the office is always seamless, thanks to mutual understanding and experience. We always think in terms of alternatives, and that's what makes the job so much fun: every day is different!”

Variety & Freedom

For Steven, this variety and freedom is what makes working at Intermotive so special. “I truly appreciate that! The workshop really feels like my ‘baby’. I've been able to turn my hobby into my job and go to work every day whistling. I am now 51 years old and have always worked in the car industry, from body repairer to workshop manager at a dealership. When the opportunity arose to join Intermotive, I grabbed it with both hands. I am a true Brabander and live a village away, so I can even cycle to work!”

Challenging his ambitions

Steven is keen to continue adapting and developing the 4X4 vehicles to the best of his ability. “What I like best are the major modifications to the vehicles. For example, replacing an engine or a complete dashboard. It allows me to use my creativity and is always a new challenge. What we do is quite unusual in the Netherlands, and that’s what makes the work so fascinating.”

Tinkering hobby

Steven: “I am married, with three children. In my spare time, I spend a lot of time with my family. My children are also crazy about cars and together with my son I restore an old Beetle. My job is quite physical, so I don't do much sport. I used to play badminton. We have had a camper van for a couple of years now and are making plans to travel together on a semi-regular basis. Scandinavia, Scotland and Ireland are on the list. We deliberately chose a reliable vehicle that I don't have to tinker with.”

Unique

Steven concludes: “Intermotive offers a lot of freedom and space for everyone to grow as individuals and there is a nice, harmonious atmosphere among us. Many people have been here for a long time, and we really are a club. It’s the little things that make it great, like having lunch together, everything is taken care of and that contributes to the special working atmosphere!”
